The medium might differ, but the essence remains the same: Ask the right questions. Whether you are an educational institution, an ambitious entrepreneur, a change-making nonprofit, or a powerhouse Fortune 500, elevate your survey design skills with me.

Over the years, I’ve immersed myself in the world of survey design. To say I’m passionate would be an understatement; I’m a self-confessed survey aficionado.

But here's the thing: You don't need years of schooling or an expert constantly guiding you to create compelling surveys. Nor should you haphazardly craft one based on a whim. A top-tier survey is a blend of science and artistry. Let me share insights, research, and processes that can transform your ideas into actionable, powerful surveys.

This course is for you if you’re wondering…

  • Yes! Absolutely. You don't actually need years of schooling or to be an expert, or to constantly work with an expert or consultant in order to create a good survey. You can learn a clear process for how to create a good survey so that it's something you can do on your own moving forward.

  • Learn a simple process for checking every survey question you write (or come across) that will tell you if it’s a good question or not. Asking better questions will ensure you get GOOD (quality) data.

With a good survey, you should be able to easily understand the data from your survey, use the information, and explain your impact in 5 minutes or less with detailed data.

  • There are multiple types of questions you can ask on surveys, and each type has a different purpose. Learn about question types (think: multiple choice, rank order, open-ended) and how to choose which ones will get you the information you need.

  • Speak their language. Learn a quick and easy process to pilot your survey questions to get feedback on them and refine them so people are able to easily answer them in a way that feels quick, easy, and meanignful for them and gets you the information you need.

  • Learn about informed consent, why it matters, and how to easily integrate it into your surveys (even on social media!)

 Question Makeovers

Kirsten, your go-to researcher.

I designed my first survey back in 2013 while working on my Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. It was a teacher survey for a randomized control trial of a new math intervention in a major U.S. City. After that, I’d go on to lead the design of the School District of Philadelphia’s annual surveys for school leaders, teachers, students, and families. I’ve led the design of school leader, teacher, coach, and student surveys for a national Bill & Melinda Gates study of professional learning and I’ve also helped schools, small businesses, and non-profits create surveys that would launch on a much smaller scale. For fun, I do “question makeovers” on TikTok, Instagram, and Youtube.
